David McCullough Uses Legacy Library Special Collections
Pulitzer Prize-winning author David McCullough made an initial visit to the Legacy Library in September 2016 to begin research on a new book he is writing. The Pioneers will focus on the initial settlement of the Northwest Territory beginning in Marietta.
As McCullough shared with library staff, history department faculty, and senior administrators, The Pioneers will begin with Manassah Cutler's efforts to persuade the Confederation Congress to adopt the Northwest Ordinance, which established the guidelines for settlement of the new lands of the United States north and west of the Ohio River. Soon after that, Congress also approved the settlement of the Marietta area by the Ohio Company of Associates.
McCullough plans to visit the Legacy Library's Special Collections several times over the next few years in order to make extensive use of our manuscript collections in his research. To be published by Simon & Schuster, The Pioneers is expected to be released in 2019.
