Marietta College Library Special Collections Acquisitions

The Marietta College Library announces recent acquisitions of interesting and important special collections.

Cornelius E. Dickinson Materials. A large collection of materials including letters, photographs, scrapbook, sermons, poems, and other writings of an early minister (1883-1896) of the First Congregational Church of Marietta, Ohio. The Reverend Dickinson was also a Marietta College trustee and the author of A History of the First Congregational Church of Marietta, Ohio (1896), and A History of Belpre, Washington County, Ohio (1920). Gift of Frances V. Metcalf, McAllen, Texas.

Additions to the Samuel Hildreth collection and other early documents of the Marietta, Ohio, area. Primarily manuscripts and letters. Accounts documented in 1839 of abductions of settlers by Native Americans that occurred in the 1790s; unattributed diary of a river voyage on the Ohio River, 1835; letters of Israel Putnam, Jr., of Belpre, to his son David Putnam (1795-1798); letters and manuscripts related to the 1785 founding of Belville, West Virginia; Lieutenant T. E. Danielson.s War of 1812 letters from Ohio.

A collection of materials of Harry Kelso Eversull (Marietta College President, 1937-1942). The collection includes letters to and from various notables including President Herbert Hoover, Alexander F. Kerensky, Norman Vincent Peale, and R.E. Olds, photographs, and books. Gift of Mrs. Louise Eversull, Greensburg, Indiana.

Manuscript daybook of John Pfaff, Salem Township, Washington County, Ohio. Inscription dated January 22, 1842; some entries are dated earlier. Contains manuscript notes, primarily in German. 174 pages. 6.5 x 8.25 inches. Gift of Joseph D. Cross of Belpre, Ohio.

A document recording the sale of shares in the Muskingum Mining Company (a silver mining project), dated February 24, 1820, and signed by John Greene, Levi Barber, and James Whitney. Gift of William Reynolds, Marietta, Ohio. This gift is made in honor of the donor's son, Aaron Reynolds, Class of 2009.

Scrapbook of photographs and ephemera relating to Marietta College made by the Rev. Berton Sweetland Levering, Class of 1912. Gift of Ralph Reinhart, Macomb, Michigan. This gift is made in honor of Jamie Boedeker, Marietta College Class of 2001, and the baseball coach who recruited him.
