Library Unveils MC's First Valedictory Speech
The valedictorian of Marietta College's first graduating class of 1838 was Samuel Hall. With the support of a mini-grant from the college's 175th Anniversary Committee, the staff of the Legacy Library worked with Etherington Conservation Services of North Carolina to conserve the documents and prepare them for long-term preservation.
Two documents comprise the first valedictory file:
- A draft on one large folded sheet
- A fine quality handwritten copy, 8 pages, hand bound in a small pamphlet
These two documents, along with portraits of the members of the first graduating class and other memorabilia of the college's first commencement, are on display in the Legacy Library's lobby through graduation. Please come by and take a look at these fascinating documents.
