FAQs: Off-campus Access

Frequently asked questions

Problems with Off-Campus Access

If you encounter a login page or a request for payment to download an article or access a library database from off campus, it is usually because you used the wrong link.

You should always start with the Legacy Library web site to get to our resources from an off-campus location. This can either be through our Research Databases link in the Locate Resources box on the library home page, or it could be a Course Guide developed for your specific class.

You should not try to use a bookmark or search for a resource on the Internet.

The links on our resources pages detect whether you are on campus or not and, if not, authenticate you with the name and barcode number that is on your student ID.  See "How to Login to Library Services" on this page. From then on, your computer appears to be on campus to the server on the other end.

If you have any problems accessing our resources, please call the Reference Desk at 740-376-4543 or email us.

Off-campus FAQs

The Library Catalog and most sections of the web page are available to the public. The Research Databases are available only to Marietta College students, faculty and staff who have been entered into the library’s database. Library registration must be updated at the beginning of each fall, spring and summer terms. Registered patrons should enter their name as it appears on their Marietta College ID and their Barcode Number when prompted. 1. What is Remote Authentication?

Legacy Library provides remote patron authentication. Students and faculty can search most databases from off-campus. The system will recognize you as an Off-Campus user. You will be prompted to enter your name as it appears on your Marietta College ID and your Barcode Number. Users can also authenticate to OhioLINK by going to the OhioLINK authentication page. Users will need to select Marietta College and then enter their name and barcode from their Marietta College ID.

2. Why do I get the message “Authentication Failed” after I type in my name and ID number?

You may have a typographical error in what you entered. Try again. You also may not be registered in the Library or may not have updated your ID in the Library. For either of these reasons, please call the circulation desk at 740-376-4757 for assistance.

3. If I click on the link on either the database listing or in the OhioLINK Catalog and I go to a page that requires a login. What should I do?

If you are on campus, you should not need to log in to any site. If you are off-campus, follow the instructions on the screen and enter your name as it appears on your Marietta College ID and your Barcode Number when prompted. Check with the reference desk if you questions at 740-376-4543 or email us.

4. How do I access electronic databases from off-campus?
