Faculty FAQs

1. How do I know what materials the library owns?

The Marietta College Library Catalog can be searched from the library home page. The online catalog provides access to collections of almost 250,000 books, continuations, periodicals (journals & magazines), government documents & media. Links to electronic videos and ebooks are also available. You may search by author, title, journal title, subject & keyword. Print materials, videos, & DVDs are arranged by the Library of Congress classification scheme.

2. How do I check out library materials? How long can I keep them?

Your Marietta College ID is your library card and must be presented when you are checking out materials. Faculty loan periods are outlined in this table. Reference & Special Collections materials do not circulate. You may View your Library Record to renew materials, remind yourself of due dates of items, and check the status of your OhioLINK requests. Marietta College Library does not charge per diem fines on overdue materials. You may also use your Marietta College ID to check out materials at other OhioLINK institutions.

3. What is OhioLINK?

The Ohio Library and Information Network (OhioLINK) is a consortium of 87 Ohio college & university libraries and the State Library of Ohio. OhioLINK membership includes access to a central catalog of institutional holdings, selected online indexes, full-text databases, reference tools, ebooks, & image collections . OhioLINK provides user-initiated online borrowing through its statewide catalog. Your Marietta College ID is required for patron authentication to borrow materials through OhioLINK. Books may be borrowed for 21 days plus four 21-day renewals (as long as another user has not requested the item) and media (AV & microforms), for 7 days, no renewal. Materials are usually received in 3-5 days. Fines of $.50/day are charged on overdue OhioLINK materials. Journal articles must be requested through interlibrary loan. In addition, you can search more than 100 online indexed & full-text databases through OhioLINK. All online products can be accessed from your room or office and from home via remote patron authentication. To access the products, select Research Databases on the library home page. The OhioLINK Library catalog is available on its home page or directly through the Marietta College Library Catalog approximately 31 million library items available in the Central Catalog including materials from several public libraries in the state.

4. Is library instruction available for students in my courses?

The reference librarians provide library instruction incorporating both electronic & print resources. Prior to a library session, a reference librarian meets with the course instructor to determine the needs of the students and the goals of the instruction. Each instruction session is specifically designed for a course. To schedule an instruction session, contact the Reference & Instruction Librarian, who coordinates the library's instruction program, at x4541.

6. How do I arrange to have materials placed on reserve for my courses?

Bring the materials for reserve to the circulation desk where you will be asked to fill out a reserve form including your name, course name & number, length of time materials are to remain on reserve and the loan period for which materials may be checked out (PDF of form) or (Web form). The library will place personal items as well as Legacy Library owned materials on reserve. Students are charged fines for overdue reserve materials. 7. Are there funds to purchase materials in my discipline for the library?

From the library's general budget and endowed funds, an allocation is made for faculty members to purchase monographs & audiovisual materials for the library collection. A faculty member may submit purchase requests for library materials at any time during the academic year. It is recommended that purchase requests be submitted by March 1st in order to receive the materials within the current fiscal year. Orders will be placed until the faculty allocation is expended. Purchase requests received after the expenditure of the faculty allocation will be held until the next fiscal year. Periodical subscriptions, continuations (e.g. annuals, yearbooks), & online databases are charged to the library's general budget. Requests for new materials requiring annual commitment of funds should be directed to the Director of the Library.

8. What is the procedure for ordering books & audiovisual materials?

You may pick up purchase request forms in the library's technical services or call x4758 for a PDF of the form to be sent to you via email. Fill in a form with all the information you know about a title and return the form to the library. If you would prefer, you can type your orders into an EXCEL spreadsheet. Please limit rush orders.

If you request a title that you want to review as soon as it arrives, write: Notify [your name] on the Remarks line of the order form. Circulation staff will contact you when the title is ready for you. If you want to know what new materials the library has acquired, go to the library home page and select New Acquisitions under Services and Forms.

9. How do I request materials on interlibrary loan?

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is for students and employees of Marietta College. ILL requests are appropriate when the item is unavailable in the Marietta College Libary or through the OhioLINK consortium. See ILL FAQs and Online Tutorials for more information.

Making an ILL Request

Copies of articles in journal titles not owned by Marietta College Library CANNOT be requested through the OhioLINK Central Catalog.  Requests for these articles must be submitted to the interlibrary loan office. Interlibrary loan (ILL) request forms are available at the reference desk in Legacy Library or online. Allow 7 to 14 days to receive materials.

Notification

When your article arrives at the library you will be notified by email. In numerous cases, the library will send the article to you directly through email as an attachment or email you instructions on how to download the item from the ILL Article Exchange web site. An email will be sent to the patron's campus email address to notify you when a requested book has arrived. Please pick up ILL books at the circulation desk. You will need your Marietta College ID. Renewal of ILL books can be granted only by the lending institution.

10. What is Special Collections?

Located on the lower level of Legacy Library, Special Collections contains the Slack Research Collections which comprise the individually named collections of rare and historical books, manuscripts & photographs. The collections number 35,000 books, 28,000 manuscripts and15,000 photographs. The College Archives & Marietta College Library Art Collection are also housed in the special collections area. Focusing on developing its collections of American and regional history, the library continues to receive donations of historical materials. Faculty & students are encouraged to use the collections for research and when appropriate for assignments. Descriptions of the Slack Research Collections are printed in the Marietta College Undergraduate Catalog and on the Special Collections web site. Materials from the various collections do not circulate under any circumstances but may be consulted during the hours Special Collections is open.
