About the Internship

Position Summary

The Special Collections Internship offers Marietta College students of opportunity to acquire paid experience working with manuscripts, photographs, and rare books. The intern will focus on a specific archival project that is compatible with his/her skills and interests and with the needs of Special Collections. The intern will also be introduced to a variety of routine archival functions and responsibilities, such as collection organization, reference assistance, preservation, and outreach. The internship should be completed in one semester with at least 50 hours of employment.

Essential Functions 

Depending upon the specific archival project assigned, the intern, Supervised by the Special Collections Librarian, will perform the following tasks: 

  • - Archival processing - Arrange and describe archival collections; create finding aids 
  • - Collections research - Review collections for materials on specific subjects; create research guides 
  •  - Digitization - Create and/or edit digital images; create and input metadata into database or collection management system
  •  - Archival Transcription - Transcribe documents or audiotapes 
  •  - Reference - Monitor the Special Collections reading room and assist visiting researchers; perform research for telephone and email inquiries 
  •  - Outreach - Research historical subjects and produce material for Special Collections; social media; assist with creation and installation of exhibits

Education, Experience and Skills Required 

  • - Must be a currently enrolled student at Marietta College with sophomore, junior, or senior standing. 
  • - Must have completed some coursework at Marietta College in the fields of History or English
  • - Must be responsible, attentive to detail, possess intellectual curiosity, and have strong communication skills 
  • - Must be able to work during Special Collections office hours 
  • -Preferred: Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
